8 signs it’s probably time for new glasses

If you’re concerned you may need new glasses, blurry vision, eye fatigue and frequent headaches are among the many signs you may need to update your current eyeglasses.

Some vision problems can be difficult to identify but easy to correct with a new pair of glasses. Here are 8 signs you may need new glasses:

1. Your vision is blurry

Blurry vision up close or at distances causes vision problems, and a new pair of glasses could be the solution.

An updated prescription to correct for nearsightedness (myopia) or farsightedness (hyperopia) can help you to see clearly again. Your eye doctor may prescribe progressive lenses, which will help you to see without blurriness at distances near, far and in-between.

If words on digital screens or in books become blurry, a pair of reading glasses or single-vision prescription lenses could make you look forward to curling up with your favorite video game or paperback thriller again.

Blurry vision raises many questions, though, and glasses might not be the answer. See your eye doctor and schedule a comprehensive eye exam. A new prescription may be all that’s needed to see clearly again.

2. You squint at screens

Squinting at your laptop, tablet and smartphone may have become second nature as you try to cope with the effects of computer vision syndrome, or digital eye strain. Symptoms include headaches, dry eyes, red eyes and — you guessed it — blurry vision.

Digital eye strain is common, and can be treated with computer glasses, which help focus your intermediate vision. Computer glasses also help to filter and block blue light, which, in excess, can be harmful to your vision and make it harder to fall asleep at night.

Do you wear contacts instead of or as a supplement to your glasses? Computer glasses are also available with non-prescription lenses.

With computer glasses, you’ll squint less, maybe have fewer headaches, and looking at screens will be less draining for your eyes. You may even sleep better with less blue light reaching your eyes.

3. You struggle with double vision

If you are seeing double, it’s a sure sign you should see your eye doctor. The causes of double vision vary and range in severity, but you might just need a new prescription for your glasses.

For example, double vision could be a symptom of crossed eyes (strabismus). If your eye doctor determines that crossed eyes are the reason for your double vision, you could need a different prescription and a new pair of glasses.

Correcting your eyes alignment issues with a new pair of glasses will keep you from seeing double.

4. You have frequent headaches

Your frequent headaches may be caused by vision problems. Some of the most common causes of headaches include outdated prescriptions and undiagnosed vision disorders, such as nearsightedness.

If you suspect your prescription is incorrect or out of date, it’s time to schedule an exam with your eye doctor to get new lenses.

Frames themselves can cause discomfort that leads to headaches. If the temples (arms) of your glasses are too tight or pressing too hard against your head, you may not need new glasses but rather a simple adjustment of your frames.

The fit of your eyeglasses may change over time due to wear. Adjustments to the nose-pieces and or temples can help restore the fit of your glasses. In return, this can help reduce or stop your headaches.

The wrong size frames are another common reason for headaches, which cannot be fixed with a simple adjustment. If this is the case, you’ll need a new pair of glasses to make your headaches vanish.

5. Your lenses or frames are damaged

Scratched lenses and lenses that are not cared for properly can make it difficult to see and can cause eye strain.

For example, cleaning your glasses with hot water can damage the lens coating, which makes it hard for you to see clearly. Follow your eye doctor’s guidance to properly care for your lenses — especially if they are photochromic or have an anti-reflective coating.

Frames can be damaged by more than just cosmetic wear and tear. The temples of glasses can also stretch over time, causing them to loosen. If your frames get too loose, there’s a chance your frames won’t be able to be adjusted to a perfect fit.

If your lenses or frames are damaged beyond repair, it’s time for new glasses.

6. It’s been a while since your last eye exam

Vision and eye prescriptions change over time. The best way to maintain good visual health is to get regular eye exams.

An annual visit with your eye doctor involves a comprehensive eye exam. Your eye doctor will perform several tests to check for signs of vision problems and other conditions during this exam. Some of these tests include:

  • Visual acuity test — this test involves reading an eye chart and tests the sharpness of your vision.
  • Ocular motility test — your eye muscles will be tested to determine the cause of any eye strain you may be experiencing.
  • Depth perception test — 3D glasses are worn during this test while you identify which objects appear closest to you on a given page.
  • Color blindness test — this tests your ability to see different colors, and can detect any problems with your eye health that may be affecting this skill.

7. You’re changing careers

One way to stand out at a new job is by upgrading your eyewear. A new pair of glasses also can improve your work performance — if you can see more clearly, you can get more done.

If your job involves working on a computer for long periods of time, computer glasses with anti-reflective lenses may be just what your employer (or your eye doctor) ordered. Computer glasses protect you from digital eye strain, and anti-reflective lenses can reduce glare given off by your screen.

Working outdoors? Photochromic lenses, which darken when they are exposed to sunlight, can protect your eyes from harmful ultraviolet (UV) rays and blue light from all of your digital devices. Added bonus: You only need one pair of glasses as photochromic lenses act as sunglasses when outside.

If your new job requires a lot of physical labor, getting new glasses with an anti-scratch coating would make your glasses more durable in case you drop them on the factory floor.

8. Your style feels outdated

Fashion trends change, and you may feel it’s time for a new eyewear look. Look in the mirror. Are your current frames like a neon sign announcing you need new glasses?

Fashion isn’t always about needs but rather about what you want -- and what you can afford. All of this applies to your eyeglasses. If you look in the mirror and you don’t need but you do want and can afford a fresh look, go for it!

A new pair of frames is a great way to update your style, and an upgrade in lenses is a smart way to keep your vision sharp at the same time.
