5 signs your glasses don't fit

If you’re constantly pushing up your glasses on your nose or holding the frames in place when you bend over, it’s past time to get your frames adjusted at your neighborhood optical shop.

If your frames are beyond repair, your eye doctor and optical shop team can help you select new frames that will fit properly. Try the frames on before you order and have an optician make adjustments until they fit your face perfectly.

Glasses are not one-size-fits-all. We all have different shaped faces, different sized heads and different spacing between our eyes. If your glasses don’t fit, get them fixed or replace them.

Here are 5 signs your glasses don’t fit:

1. You often adjust your glasses on your nose

In the summertime, your glasses will naturally slide down your nose. Blame this slippage on a combination of sweat and gravity.

If you find that your glasses regularly slide down your nose, even when you’re not perspiring, it’s a sign that your glasses don’t fit your face.

WHAT TO DO: Take your glasses to an optician near you so they can adjust the nose-pieces and the general fit of your frames. After the adjustment, if the bridge of your glasses doesn’t fit the bridge of your nose, it might be time to get a new pair of glasses.

2. Your glasses fall off when you bend over

If you play sports, your glasses are more likely to fly off your face, no matter how well they fit.

If you’re in a yoga class, your glasses will almost certainly fall off when you take half-moon or crow positions.

Your glasses also are unlikely to stay on your face when you dance, play soccer or repeatedly bend over to load the dishwasher or washing machine.

If you’re just bending over to get something out of your bag or to pick something off of the floor and your glasses fall off, that’s a clear sign your frames are too large for your face or need to be refitted.

WHAT TO DO: Visit an optical shop near you and have an expert optician adjust your glasses until you get a perfect fit. What is a perfect fit if your frames were loose? Your glasses should stay in place when you’re standing and touch your shoes, and your frames aren’t so tight that they are pinching the sides of your face.

3. Your glasses leave red spots on your nose

Your glasses shouldn’t press into your face at any point. If your glasses are leaving red indentations on your nose, then your frames are too small for your face — or at least the bridge of your glasses is too small for your nose.

Small indentations are normal, but glaring sore, red spots are not.

WHAT TO DO: If your glasses are uncomfortable, get them adjusted by an optician or trade up and get a new pair (if the adjustment didn’t work). When you look in a mirror or a photo gallery, you don’t want to see red eyes — or red spots on your nose.

4. You have markings near your temples from too-tight glasses

Your glasses once were the right size for your face, but the size of your head can change over time. Weight gain also can play a role in how well your glasses fit.

If you have deep, red indentations on the sides of your face when you take off your glasses, you probably need larger frames.

WHAT TO DO: See your neighborhood optician and get your frames adjusted. If your frames are unable to be finessed to fit you perfectly, your optician can help you pick out new frames that will fit your face shape, be stylish and won’t leave red marks near your temples!

5. Your eyes feel strained

Eye strain has many causes, and one of them is ill-fitting glasses.

If you recently upgraded your frames (your prescription was unchanged) to a more trendy look, your glasses could be the reason your eyes feel strained. Your new glasses may not fit as perfectly as your old frames.

Here’s why: The same prescription can feel different in new frames, especially if the pupillary distance (or distance between your eyes) isn’t taken into account when you get glasses.

WHAT TO DO: Get expert help from your neighborhood optician and your eye doctor. Your new glasses may just need a further adjustment to better fit your face so your eyes feel less strained. Before you head to see your optician, check your warranty on your new glasses. If you can’t get a perfect fit, you may be able to get a replacement pair of glasses that will be both trendy and comfortable.
